“We just want people to come out because we want to share our music with them,” said Dr. Nathaniel Johnson, WNCC’s instrumental activities director.
This year’s theme – North American Road Trip – builds around the event’s soloists of Gina Johnson and Austin Sailors, both adjunct faculty at WNCC.
Gina Johnson, who plays the oboe, will be performing “Souvenir of Old Quebec,” which was transcribed by her former graduate school professor specifically for her.
“It will be the second performance of that piece ever in that arrangement, as far as I’m aware,” Nathaniel Johnson said. “Gina was the soloist at the first performance, too.”
Meanwhile, Sailors, a saxophone player, will be performing “Georgia On My Mind.”
“These adjunct faculty are some of the best I’ve worked with in my career, so I’m just really excited to be able to feature them in the concert,” Nathaniel Johnson said.
The Western Nebraska Winds tie the soloist performances together with a variety of pieces featuring cities and states throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. A few of the songs performed by the group include “St. Louis Blues March,” “New York State of Mind,” and “America” from “West Side Story.”
