Oscar night is right around the corner! Do you like filling out an Oscar ballot with who you think will win? Do you, like us, often just randomly guess when it comes to the Short Subject portion of the Nominees? Well now you don’t have to! The Historic Midwest Theater is showing all of the Nominees for this year’s Oscars. Not only will you be able to fill out your Oscar ballot with more confidence, but you will be entertained, educated, and amazed by this collection of Short films.

The Nominees for Best Animated Short are:

Letter to a Pig

A Holocaust survivor writes, after the war, a thank-you letter to a pig that saved his life. After his testimony in a classroom, a young student dreams a tragic version of his story. Beyond her personal vision, the film also explores the themes of collective trauma, vengeance, human evil and compassion.

Our Uniform

An Iranian girl unfolds her school memories through the wrinkles and fabric of her old uniform. She admits that she’s nothing but a “female” and explores the roots of this idea in her school years.

Like every summer, Louise stays at her grandparents in the countryside for a few days during the holidays. It will snow at the height of summer and a monster is going to die.

War is Over! Inspired by the Music of John & Yoko

Set in an alternate WW1 reality where a senseless war rages on, two soldiers on opposite sides of the conflict play a game of chess. A heroic carrier pigeon delivers the soldiers’ chess moves over the battlefield as the fighting escalates. Neither soldier knows his opponent as the game and the war builds to its climatic final move. Whoever wins the game, one thing is certain” there are no winners in war.

Although these films are animated they deal with adult themes and are not recommended for children under the age of 13 unless with their guardian.
