Sixteen Candles – 40th Anniversary

Sixteen Candles – 40th Anniversary

You only turn 16 once, but for Samantha Banks (Molly Ringwald) her “sweet” sixteen is anything but special. Her family has completely forgotten about it because of her sister’s wedding, all four of her grandparents visiting, and the wacky foreign exchange student staying with them. If that doesn’t make Samantha’s life crazy enough, she’s being crushed on by the weirdest boy in school who’s only referred to as The Geek (Anthony Micheal Hall) while she’s convinced that her crush, Jake (Micheal Schoefflinger), has no clue she exists. She struggles through one embarrassment after another to live through “the worst birthday ever” but at the end of the day her wish just might come true.

The directorial debut of John Hughes, who would become the “voice of the 80’s teen” showing how uncomfortable, complicated, and funny it can be growing up in the 80’s. Also starring Gedde Watanabe, Paul Dooley, Billie Bird, John Cusack, Joan Cusack, Brian Doyle-Murray, Jami Gertz, John Kapelos, and Zelda Rubinstein.
